UK postgraduate requirements
Academic Requirements:
Typically, a student's academic record and level of English proficiency are evaluated when deciding whether or not to admit them to a university in the United Kingdom. However, specific prerequisites and deadlines sometimes differ between schools and even between individual courses.
The standards that universities and colleges use to determine who is admitted to their courses vary greatly from one institution to the next and from one course to another within a given field.
A student's appropriateness for enrollment in some courses may also be determined by results of an admissions test, a personal statement, a CV, references, and/or an interview.
In the United Kingdom, the school year begins in September and is divided into three terms: autumn/fall (September–December), spring (January–April), and summer (June–August) (May to August).
You Must Be Able to Communicate in English
Students applying to schools in the United Kingdom typically must take an English language test to prove they are proficient in English, as it is the language of instruction there. Examining how well a student can read, listen, speak, and write in English is the primary focus of standardized language examinations.
In general, the following exams are recognised for admission to college-level programmes:
• Academic IELTS and the United Kingdom Visa and Immigration (UKVI) English Language Testing System
• TOEFL iBT (Test of English as a Foreign Language) (IBT)
Both schools and programmes have different minimum scores needed on language tests for admittance. A student's IELTS score must be between 5.5 and 6.5 (often 6.0), with no band lower than 5.5 or 6.0, and their TOEFL (internet-based test) score must be between 60 and 90.
Studying and working in the United Kingdom
Students from other countries who are enrolled in an undergraduate or postgraduate degree programme at a recognised university in the United Kingdom can legally work a maximum of 20 hours per week part-time during the academic year and 40 hours per week during the summer break provided they meet certain requirements.
Opportunities to Work Part-Time and Their Varieties
The following are some of the most popular part-time employment in the UK for students from India:
1. Find a job on the campus
Finding a job at the institution or college that you are currently attending is one of the most common and common alternatives available to you as an international student. There are a variety of part-time jobs available on campus, including those in the student unions, the cafeteria, and in the roles of assistant and mentor. You could undertake marketing for the university, write blogs for the university's website, or manage the university's social media if the university accepts support from international students in the promotion of the university.
2. Cafe/Bars/Restaurants
It is also fairly usual for students to work part-time throughout the school year in a restaurant. You might work in the restaurant industry as a waiter, a cashier, or even in the kitchen if you have the necessary abilities. The tips that you make as a server in nice restaurants are an advantage of the job since they allow you to make a little more money overall than the minimum wage does.
What should one do after completing postgraduate studies?
New for the year 2021: the Graduate Immigration Route
When picking where to go to school, Indian students place a high priority on the opportunities that await them after graduation.
It is essential for overseas graduates to find job after graduation, not only to get valuable work experience but also to generate revenue that can assist balance the financial investment made by their
families and contribute to the repayment of their educational loans.
Students who have obtained a Tier 4 student visa are permitted to remain in the United Kingdom for a maximum of four (4) months after they have finished their studies, or for a maximum of six (6) months if they were enrolled in a Master's degree programme during their time in the UK.
The purpose of this extension is to provide students with additional time following graduation to find work in the UK that is relevant to them.
A Student Visa for the United Kingdom
To study in the UK, international students require a visa. Students older than 16 require a General Student Visa (Tier 4). Applications for T4 Student Visas are submitted online. The visa application deadline for students is three (3) months prior to the start of their degree. Before applying, they must also have received an unconditional offer of admission from a licenced Tier 4 sponsor.
Qualifications to Enroll in a Course
The following types of programmes are eligible to receive a General Student Visa:
• Full-time leading to a level 6 or 7 Ofqual qualification
• Full-time, with at least 15 hours per week of organised daytime study, resulting to a level 3 certification on the Ofqual Register of Regular Qualifications
• An English course at level B2 or above on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.
Duration
In most cases, a T4 Student Visa will be granted for the whole length of a student's enrollment. Students can arrive in the UK up to one month before the start of a six-month study and stay for up to four months after the end of the term. Since September 2018, those who have earned a Master's degree (but not a postgraduate certificate or diploma) in the United Kingdom are permitted to remain in the country for up to six months following graduation. If a student plans on enrolling in further courses after completing their present one, they might petition to extend their visa. When their student visa ends, individuals can apply for a work visa if they have secured employment.
A new Graduate Immigration Route was announced by the British government in September 2019, and it will be available to applicants beginning in the summer of 2021. Under the Graduate Immigration Route, qualified international students will be able to remain in the UK after finishing their studies and continue working (or searching for job) for a period of up to two years under the Graduate Immigration Route.
Students who wish to remain in the UK through this route are not required to have a job offer waiting for them when they arrive. Only international students who have finished their degree-level coursework in or after the summer of 2021 are eligible to apply for immigration through the Graduate Immigration Route.
In order for students to be considered for the route, they will be expected to complete the following tasks:
1. Complete and send in an application.
2. Make the payment for the visa.
3. Be responsible for the Immigration Health Fee.
