International students who earn their master's or post-graduate degree in Ireland are eligible for a 2-year work visa after they leave the country. To be eligible to apply for Permanent Residency in Ireland, you must first reside in the country for a cumulative period of at least 5 years while holding a general work permit. In order to qualify for permanent residency in Ireland, you need only be present for two years if you hold a Critical Skills Employment Permit. The goal of the Critical Skills Employment Permit is to encourage highly skilled individuals to settle permanently in Ireland by giving them access to the country's labour market. If you applied for your residence permit at GNIB 9 (Garda National Immigration Bureau), the five or two-year mark will be reached on the date you registered for your permit.
